A young Jewish refugee with her Chinese playmates. Shanghai, China (x)

Between 1933 and 1941, it is estimated that 20,000 Jews escaped persecution by fleeing to the Chinese port of Shanghai. Shanghai was one of the few places in the world that would accept Jewish refugees at this time, Japan being another.

i am furious that i am just now learning about this important fact.

Because it has nothing to do with the USA being the superhero and saving all the Jews

Sigh. I go to a Jewish school (since I’m a Jew) and we hardly focus at all on the saving of our people, and almost entirely on how we died.  That aside, I’ve spoken to many many survivors in my own community, and when they tell you about the American soldiers in their big tanks, their eyes light up.  They thought of the Americans as angels.  Our army rescued them.  The only complaint I hear, is that we should have gone in sooner.  Not everything is about “the man” trying to make this country sound sooo cool!  Sometimes our troops do amazing things and save amazing lives and it has nothing to do with how you feel about this country.  These people went through hell!  The fact that 20,000 escaped so early on and didn’t have to is beautiful, but why does this have to turn into us attacking America? Why can’t a beautiful thing be a beautiful thing?  How dare you complain about how the country represents itself? No one is mass murdering your family here!  We saved people who were getting their families mass murdered, even if we were too late.  My community praises the troops who saved them.  So stop complaining and start seeing that some things are just miracles and not everything is about your personal battle against this country.

i can’t stop imagining an AU where everything is the same except Bill has no “master plan” and is just a chaotic-neutral demon who does dubious things (like still invading Stan’s mind for Gideon, oops), but finds the twins amusing as hell and sticks around them long enough to actually start liking them. he prefers being their size, wearing anything Mabel makes for him (especially his sweater), forgetting about the thing called “personal space”, and stealing their clothes for nests
complete with weird demon habits and lack of social skills. at least his penchant for being a destructive mischievous shit kinda of works with 12 year olds
